Why Art Matters

Kimberly Reddington · July 21, 2014 · Leave a Comment

We all have rough patches.

Just remember that. Life can really grind you down sometimes, you know what I mean – it just gets crazy. Even with the most positive of attitudes your soul can just hurt. Personal events occur, national and international events take place and discomfort your soul without you even realizing.

Two Options.

There are good ways to deal with the pressures of life, and there are the “not-so-good” ways. I am guilty of the latter and am learning daily to cope the good way – through art, work that matters. A way that will result in a better me and you.

Art heals.

When you listen to music, you can relate to the artist. You can feel at ease knowing that you are not the only one going though a difficult time. When you listen to music you can “let loose” and zone into a moment, freeing your mind of discomfort.

When you see a painting, a sculpture or a photograph that an artist has put blood, sweat, passion and overwhelming hours into you get a FEELING. A feeling that takes away the pain, even for a moment.

When you create a new masterpiece you can now pivot your pain into creativity instead of suffering further by coping in a “not-so-good” way. You can create something that not only you are proud of, but may in fact make someone else feel again.

Support an artist today.

Artists deserve our support. With so much chaos going on in this world today, supporting something that can actually make this world a better place is very important. Go out and buy a new book, purchase a new single on iTunes, invest in a new painting that can brighten your smile when you walk through your door on any given day. Think of that time you were at rock-bottom and could thank an artist for pulling you up. Encourage a creative person to keep creating. Let’s keep the good going..

Full Sail University students Riley Young, Tyler Sheppard & Brandon Pope

LinkedKim: So I heard your podcast for your school project on SoundCloud – how inspiring! Tell me a little about what you have going on!

Tyler: I’ve been at Full Sail for a little over a year and a half now. They stress on networking while your here, and I’ve made some solid connections that I believe will last the length of my career.

LinkedKim: You are absolutely right – networking is key! Glad to hear you are making your connections. At this point do you have any plans for after you graduate?

Tyler: Me and a couple friends (Riley Young from West Chesterfield, NH. and Brandon Pope from Charlotte, NC) are all graduating this summer and plan on heading out to Denver after. We’re going to make a trip out there sometime in June hopefully and look for a place to start up our own studio. We have a decent amount of recording equipment ourselves and are concentrating our efforts to invest together on some more recording studio necessities. Hopefully sometime in 2015 we will have a fully functional recording studio based in Denver. For now our main focus is on finishing school but we’ve been planning to start up our own business after school for awhile now. We come from different backgrounds and each have something unique to add in the recording environment, along with the Full Sail education I’m confident that we are able to start up and run our own recording studio.

A BIG THANK YOU to Tyler for the exclusive interview. I wish you guys the best of luck in your exciting career path, nothing beats doing what you are passionate for!

PODCAST CONTENT:
hi my name is tyler sheppard. i am in the the recoding arts program at full sail. professionally i would like to work in sound design. post, music, anything really. the topic i chose for my podcast project is amy winehouse. amy winehouse redefined music for me. i used to be musically ignorant. and i only listened to genres i know and that i liked and disregarded anything else. hearing amys voice for the first time changed everything about that. in pop music many vocalists just aren’t good enough to have little or no post processing effects done always needing it to be tuned or pocketed to fit into the groove of the track and to sound smooth and proper. amy had such an expression in her voice that it really wasn’t needed. i would like to think that many pop artists study her music and try and achieve that level of vocal control and originality. i truly believe that no matter what your involvement in the music industry you should listen to – front to back – her album lioness hidden treasures. she has one of the most expressive and versatile voices i have ever heard and it’s a shame her life came to an early end. she left an impact on the music industry that i believe will last forever and should be studied by everyone trying to become the greatest. she sure has changed my outlook on music forever and definitely gave me a whole other avenue to look down.
