This week’s Toastmasters (public speaking & leadership organization) meeting had a dual-theme of both a tribute to Robin Williams and mentors. I opened up the meeting explaining that Robin Williams was one of my many mentors. I have a million.
A mentor is described as an experienced and trusted adviser. When I first learned what a mentor was, I did not fathom the idea that in reality, you could have as many as you want. After joining Toastmasters, I realized that each and every member of the organization was my mentor.
Each person in our Toastmasters group has a specific strength. Annie can literally lift the crowd off their chairs with enthusiasm. Luis can make the audience die laughing with one simple expression. Kurt can smoothly talk through a speech as if it is eight millionth one.
The point is – each member brings something unique and admirable to the table. I learn something new from each member, no matter how experienced or inexperienced of a public speaker they are. We teach each other. We grow together.
I strongly believe throwing yourself into the realm of powerful people strengthens you exponentially. I would like to thank each of the Toastmasters members and all the other mentors that I have. Thank you for the personal growth I have accumulated due to your stellar individual characteristics.
